Writing the Perfect Image Prompt

Generating accurate and consistent image styles with AI requires having a well-structured prompt. However, this can be a difficult process- especially if you don’t have the words to explain the style you want.

This guide outlines how you can use AI to replicate your exact style across any subject. When you nail your prompting technique, you'll skip the frustration of endless regenerations, which will save you both time and Credits.

💡 TLDR

Why Style Guidance in Image Prompts Matters

Without style guidance, AI generates images that look completely different each time- even when you use the same basic prompt. This is because each time you generate an image, the AI samples from different possibilities within its vast training data. This training data includes millions of images across every artistic style, technique, and visual approach imaginable. When you give a basic prompt like "a house," the AI randomly selects from its library of trained data which can result in varying images.

Style guidance acts as a filter that narrows down the AI's decision-making process, forcing it to consistently sample from a specific set of styles rather than the entire range of options.

The images below used Flux.1 Kontext pro to generate an image of a dog in front of an object. Though the structure of the prompt is nearly identical, the outputs are radically different because there was no style specified.

How to Write an Image Prompt

  1. Start by finding an image (or several) that represents exactly the style you want to replicate. This could be your own artwork, a style you admire, or even a single image that captures the aesthetic you're after

  2. Upload your reference image to an LLM such as Sonnet 4, GPT-4o or Gemini 2.5 Pro and use this prompt:

I would like an AI to imitate my illustration style. I am looking for a prompt to describe my style so that it can replicate it with any subject I choose.

  3. The LLM will provide a prompt that describes your desired image style

  4. Copy and paste your style either as a Role or a Prompt (see below to decide which may work best for you)

  5. Name your Role or Prompt appropriately eg., “Children’s Coloring Page Style”

  6. Switch to an image generator and test out your new Role/Prompt with your first image

Example

Here I have chosen to create a children’s coloring page style prompt. Scroll through the Thread to view the whole workflow.

In this example I used Focus Mode for the initial message so that the image generator would not be confused with any previous information in the Thread. An alternative to this would be to start a new Thread.

Saving your Image Style

Next, you can take this description and save it either as a Role or a Prompt. Your choice will depend on how you plan to use your images. You may even choose to save it as both a Role and Prompt and then switch between them depending on your task.

Saving your Style as a Role:

Best for ongoing projects, using a Role works well when you'll be generating multiple images with the same style and elements.

Creating a Role

  1. Click the + button in the left side bar and select Role
  2. Name your Role
  3. Paste the image style description in the Role’s guidelines
  4. Select a Space to add your Role in under Space Favorites
  5. Hit save to add your Role to your Space

Saving your Style as a Prompt:

Best for one-off projects, using a Prompt works well if you would like to edit elements as you go. For example when there are several elements in the prompt that should change.

Creating a Prompt

  1. Click the + button in the left side bar and select Prompt
  2. Name your Prompt
  3. Paste the image style description in the Prompt’s instructions
  4. Select a Space to add your Prompt in under Space Favorites
