Getting Started

Welcome to Expanse! This platform is designed to make working with AI simple, fast and hyper-productive. In this guide, you'll learn how to set up your first Space, Role, and Prompts, as well as how to switch between LLMs.

Getting started takes about 5 minutes.

Onboarding

When you launch Expanse for the first time, you will be Prompted to select a profession or interest that is relevant to you. After submitting this, Expanse will create a relevant Space with three Roles that are tailored to the profession/interest that you had selected.

Spaces

A Space is where you chat with your AI - think of it as a dedicated workspace tailored to specific tasks or projects. Spaces are a way to organize your Roles, Prompts and Threads so that each suite is customised for your differing workflows.

For example, if you are bakery owner, you might have one Space for brainstorming your marketing materials, one Space for new recipe ideas and another Space for managing your business operations.

Roles

Roles define the AI's expertise for your specific needs. Think of them as giving the AI a persona or professional background. Chatting with a Role ensures that the AI’s responses remain relevant and specialized to your needs.

Using a Role

You can tell if a Role is assigned by looking for the Role block in the chat box.

Switching Roles

1. Use the shortcut ⌘/Ctrl + Rto pull up the Role list
2. Use your arrow keys to navigate through
3. Use the return / enter key to select the Role you want to assign

Alternatively, you can type the @ symbol in the chat box and hit tab to see the Roles list.

View/edit your Roles:

1. Navigate to the Roles icon in the left sidebar
2. Here you can view all of your Roles in the Space
3. To edit a Role, hit the 3 dots on the right or use the return / enter key

Creating Roles with Magic Pen

In Expanse, you can either create a new Role from scratch or let the Magic Pen tool generate one for you.

1. Click the + button in the left side bar and select Role
2. In the title field, describe the Role you need and hit the Magic Pen button to let Expanse auto-generate the Role’s guidelines
3. Once done generating, you can edit the Role’s guidelines by typing or removing any instructions
4. Hit save to add your Role to your Space

Prompts

Prompts are reusable instructions that speed up your workflow as it saves you from typing the same command over and over again. This also helps create consistent results from the AI. Think of your saved Prompts like shortcuts for common tasks you ask the AI to do.

Creating Prompts with Magic Pen

Similarly to Roles, you can either create a new Prompt from scratch or let Expanse’s Magic Pen tool generate one for you.

1. Click the + button in the left side bar and select Prompt
2. In the title field, briefly describe the Prompt you need and hit the Magic Pen button to let Expanse auto-generate the Prompt’s instructions
3. Once done generating, you can edit the Prompt’s instructions by typing or removing any instructions
4. Hit save to add your Prompt to your Space

Using a Prompt

1. In the chat box, type @ to pull up your list of Prompts
2. Use your arrow keys to navigate through the list
3. Use the return / enter key to select the Prompt you want to use

Your prompt will appear in the chat box (Editor). You can tell if a prompt has been inserted as it will have a blue highlight background.

Once in the chat, you can continue to edit the Prompt or add more details to the message before sending to the AI.

View/edit your Prompts:

1. Navigate to the Prompt icon in the left sidebar
2. Here you can view all of your Prompts in the Space
3. To edit a Prompt, hit the 3 dots on the right or use the return / enter key

LLMs

Expanse lets you seamlessly switch between all the top LLMs. This is useful as there are a range of LLMs, with a range of skills and strengths. You can hover over them for a short description or check out our summary here.

Switching LLMs

1. To switch LLMs, click on the LLM selector in the chat box or use the shortcut ⌘/Ctrl + L

Regenerating Messages

To compare answers between LLMs, simply change the LLM and hit “regenerate.” This will prompt the LLM to regenerate an answer based on the exact same context as the previous prompt.

Threads

Threads are a record of the conversation you have with an AI; it holds all the messages you send to the AI. All your threads are kept on the right side panel. You can create a new thread by clicking the “New Thread” button or using the shortcut ⌘/Ctrl + N
